Asato Ma Sad Gamaya

A remarkable mantra from the Yajur Veda. It is also in Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad 1.3.28

असतोमा सद्गमय।
तमसोमा ज्योतिर् गमया।
मृत्योर्मामृतं गमय॥

Aum
Asato mā sad gamaya
Tamaso mā jyotir gamaya
Mṛtyormā amṛtam gamaya
Aum śānti śānti śāntiḥ

meaning:

Aum (this is the primordial sound)
Asato mā sad gamaya (from non-truth lead me to truth)
Tamaso mā jyotir gamaya (from darkness lead me to light)
Mṛtyormā amṛtam gamaya (from death lead me to immortality)
Aum śānti śānti śāntiḥ (peace)

Note: Many consider “asat” as ignorance or unreal; however, it is more rightly expressed as non-truth, as  “a” means non and “sat” means truth.
