Student Visa for UK

UK Tier visas

UK visas are of five types known as ‘tiers’. For students, the visa type is known as Tier 4 (Child) Student visa (for 4-17 years of age), and Tier 4 (General) Student visa (for 16+ years of age).

Tier 4 (General) Student Visa

  • A Tier 4 visa is issued to a student who has complied with all the Immigration Rules, and has got a total of 40 points.
  • A student applies to an academic institution (which is registered in UK Border Agency Sponsor Register) and receives an unconditional offer from them. Thereafter, a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS), which is an important electronic document, is requested from the academic institution. The CAS statement provides 30 points.
  • The UK Border Agency has to be satisfied that the student can afford the total costs (cost of study + the cost of living) in UK during the period of study. The cost of living depends on the lifestyle of the student; however, generally they are about 12,000 GBP annually (if staying in inner London) and about 9000 GBP annually (if staying in outer London).  The cost of study varies according to the academic institution selected. Satisfaction of the necessary fund requirement will provide another 10 points. With CAS and satisfactory funds, the student gains a total of 40 points.
  • With the compliance of other visa formalities and 40 points, the student obtains a Tier 4 (General) student visa.
